...The Heat Cranks Up A Notch...

We are forecasting a trend toward increasing amounts of sunshine and fewer
afternoon thunderstorms through the weekend as the air becomes more stable
across the deep south. And, of course, with lots of sunshine in mid-July the
heat will be the big story. We are expecting the hottest weekend so far this
summer, with daytime high temperatures in the 90 to 95 degree range over
much of north and central Alabama. And, factor in the humidity and heat
index values rise to near 100 degrees at times.

There is always a chance of a pop-up afternoon storm on a July afternoon in
Alabama, but we think the ones over the weekend will be very widely spaced,
and most places will be dry.

Next week the heat ridge aloft shifts to the west, and we expect a general
increase in the number of afternoon storms by Tuesday and Wednesday, with
high temperatures dropping accordingly.

HIT AND MISS: Yesterday, not a drop of rain fell at the Birmingham Airport,
but at the ABC 33/40 Studio in Riverchase we measured a whopping 1.66" from
an afternoon storm. A very classic example of the "hit and miss" nature of
afternoon storms on summer day around here.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with only
widely scattered storms. Temperatures will peak in the 88 to 91 degree
range, and the sea water temperature late yesterday was very warm 87 degrees
just off the Alabama Gulf coast.

TROPICS: A disturbance just southwest of Bermuda has the potential to grow
into the season's first tropical depression today. But, it moving northeast,
away from the continental United States and is no threat to us.
