==================================================================

Well, it's July and the weather is certainly acting July-ish. We're getting
close to what is traditionally our hottest time of the year. Here in Central
Alabama, July is the hottest month of the year. To be more specific, if the
weather acts normal, our hottest time will be between July 15 and August 15
when the normal high temperature (at Birmingham Airport) is 91. We haven't
had any threat of 100-degree weather for the last three Julys, but it can
certainly get hot this time of year. In that sizzling heat wave in 1980, we
had eight days in a row with temperature 100 or hotter between July 10-17.
July is the wettest summer month and it's also our thunderstorm champion.

Long-term records show that a thunderstorm will occur on an average of 12
days in July-almost every other day. An average of 17 days will have
temperatures 90 or above.

With all the showers and thunderstorms in recent weeks, we have been lucky
to not have a major heat wave. The old thermometer is going to be heating up
a bit in the next few days, however. Some communities could reach the mid
90s on Saturday.

Coinciding with the hotter temperatures will be a drop off in shower and
thunderstorm activity. This is the first time in three or four days that we
have not had a big complex of strong thunderstorms moving toward our area
from the Central Plains. For the next four or five days, we think there will
only be widely separated thunderstorms each afternoon.

There were big amounts of rain in a number of communities yesterday and some
scattered reports of wind damage. Just a few of the heavier rainfall
amounts:

2.65 inches in Selma
1.54 in Troy
1.04 in Talladega

TROPICAL WEATHER: Just a tiny bit of excitement because of a disturbed
weather area 250 miles SW of Bermuda. Not many thunderstorms yet, but the
system seems to be developing a small surface low. It could develop more
over the next day or so as it moves NE 10-15.

AIR QUALITY: We were under a code yellow again today, which means moderate
air quality.

SEVERE WEATHER: There 19 reported tornadoes yesterday and 18 of those were
concentrated in North Central Kansas. The bulls eye for the worst severe
weather today is in Nebraska...major flash flooding around Baltimore
Wednesday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly's routine has been
interrupted so much lately because of installing bookshelves, house shaking
thunderstorms and repair work on our dishwasher. She pays close attention to
anything that doesn't fit her ritual. I had a long play session with her
late last night to make up to her and she loved it dearly. We were on the
king-sized bed and she would charge me from all corners of the bed like she
was going to gobble me up, but she would stop short by about three inches.

Then she took off and ran all through the house with her tires squealing
(her claws digging into the carpet.)...another uneventful walk this morning,
but she got hot and tired and insisted on lying down under a shade tree and
licking the wet grass. Life goes on-hot or freezing cold.
