...Hot And Steamy Summer Weather...
Our forecast package today will highlight scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms across Alabama. Trying to pin down the best time and location
for the rain, as usual on a summer day, will be difficult due to the
plethora of boundaries left over from last night's storms.
Speaking of those storms yesterday and last night, there were a number of
power outages across the state due to strong winds and lightning, and some
very heavy rain was measured. Our own J.B. Elliott in Trussville reported
2.01". Our weather watcher in Nauvoo picked up 1.38". The ABC 33/40 Weathnet
station at the Talladega Superspeedway measured a peak wind gust of 70 mph
during a passing evening storm. Winds gusted to 41 mph at Legion Field in
Birmingham and between 30 and 40 mph in both Anniston and Gadsden. There was
scattered tree and power line damage around the state, and one house was set
on fire due to lighting in Madison county, near Hazel Green.
One or two passing storms are a good bet tomorrow, but they should thin out
greatly by Friday and the weekend as temperatures aloft begin to warm and
the air grows more stable. Highs over the weekend will be in the low 90s,
with heat index values around 100 at times on both Saturday and Sunday
afternoon.
TROPICS: A series of tropical waves are seen in the far eastern Atlantic,
but sea water temperatures are relatively cool and any development will be
rather slow.
THIS IS SUMMER? The high yesterday in Fargo, ND was only 57 degrees with
clouds 1.34" of rain. Lake Yellowstone, WY reported a frosty low of 34
degrees early yesterday, and was the cold spot in the "lower 48".
