ALABAMA WEATHER UPDATE 9:00 A.M.: A cold front lies acoss North Alabama on
this Saturday morning. A broken line of moderate to occasionally heavy
showers is indicated on radar extending from Cullman, Walker and Jefferson
Counties westward across northern Tuscaloosa and Pickens County. This
activity was pushing to the southeast and will move across much of the
Birmingham metro area between 9 a.m. and noon. No lightning is indicated
with the showers at this time, but it could develop at any time. If
thunderstorms approach your area, remember the 30/30 rule. Seek safe
shelter when thunder folllows a lightning strike in 30 seconds or less and
stay there until 30 minutes after you hear the last thunder. Additional
showers and storms will continue to develop over North and Central Alabama
throughout the day, to the south of the frontal boundary.

GOOD MORNING! Well, we have really seen that rainfall deficit dropping off
this week here in Birmingham. A week ago, the deficit was over four inches.
This morning, it has dropped to just two inches. Before the weekend is
over, we might even be in the surplus department. Boy, my grass has been
enjoying hearing that old rain gauge clicking.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS this morning, we find a weak frontal system lying
across North Alabama. The front slid southward into the state overnight in
the wake of a weak surface trough that drifted across North Alabama
yesterday. Showers and thunderstorms are developing to the south of the
front over North Central Alabama. This development will continue throughout
the day.

TONIGHT AND SUNDAY: Low pressure developing to the west of Alabama will send
the front packing northward as a warm front. This will bring back shower
and thunderstorm chances again. As a matter of fact, North Central Alabama
could see some heavy rainfall amounts between Saturday night and Sunday
evening. Some locations could pick up in excess of two inches of rain.
Hence the possible end of the deficit.

NEXT WEEK: The old front will continue to be an unwelcome house guest
through the first part of the coming week. Shower and storm chances will
diminish somewhat, but will be in the forecast through at least Wednesday.

OZONE ALERT: The Air Quality Index in the Jefferson/Shelby area is in the
YELLOW alert category today. We will be in the GREEN category on Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: Residents along the Southwest Louisiana coast listened
to the radio warnings about Hurricane Audrey ad went to bed thinking that
they had plenty of time to evacuate the following morning. Many of them
awakened to the sound of storm surge flooding into their homes.
