NO DUST STORMS IN ALABAMA: It seems that every square mile of soil in
Alabama is well anchored—waterlogged is a good word. Many sections of the
state no longer show a rainfall deficit for 2004. At one time, the shortfall
at Birmingham had reached near six inches—now it is only two inches. Before
the weekend is over, there is a good chance that two inches will vanish.

There was a break from so much rain this morning across Central Alabama but
more showers and thunderstorms were forming this afternoon.. Some of those
will bring us some more heavy rain especially through the evening hours.
With some slightly drier temporarily taking over in North Alabama Saturday,
we should see a decrease in showers and thunderstorms, only to increase
again Sunday. Finally, the weather should settle down into a better-behaved
summer pattern Monday and Tuesday with the usual scattered thunderstorms
each day. We could fill three pages with interesting rainfall for the last
24 hours. We must list only these heavier amounts:

4.53 inches at Dime (Franklin County TVA report)
3.69 at Cherokee (Colbert County)
2.77 at Geraldine
2.72 at Fort Payne
2.68 at Oakland (Lauderdale County)
1.63 at Trafford (3.37 last two days)
2.07 in Red Bay
2.42 at Collinsville
1.47 at Birmingham Airport
1.82 in Oneonta
1.16 in NE Trussville (6.32 for June so far)
1.33 in Mobile (12.14 in June so far)

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A high probability of showers and thunderstorms
through Sunday—especially Saturday when rain may be heavy at times. NWS
reports a low chance of rip currents Saturday and moderate Sunday.

TROPICAL: The Atlantic Basin is quiet...no storms soon. At noon on this date
in 1957, a tropical depression in the SW Gulf was upgraded to Hurricane
Audrey. That non-lady went on to become a powerful Category 4 and went
ashore two days later and literally wiped out the coastal town of Cameron,
Louisiana.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: Frosty this morning in parts of Michigan, Minnesota,
Wisconsin, a sub-freezing 30 at Pellston and Grayling,
Michigan...interesting to note that it was 15 degrees hotter in Tetlin,
Alaska yesterday than it was in Huntsville, Cullman and Birmingham. They had
94 as the record heat continued in Alaska...in Wisconsin, Green Bay reports
only three days this year when the temperature reached 80.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A big traffic jam in my recliner all night. I
slept there with a bunch of pillows, radio, TV control, magazine and
newspapers and, guess who! Yep, little Miss Molly forged her way into the
recliner with me and scratched out a tiny space and slept most of the night.
At 3:12 a.m., she rang the little back doorbell vigorously, meaning it was
time to go. I "un-elevated" my leg and don’t tell my wife, but I got dressed
and slipped out for a short walk with Molly—the first in a week. She seemed
so happy at that wee hour. She was strutting across the front yard and
driveway like a miniature Tennessee walking horse. Molly and I have bonded
even more, if that is possible, during my down time. She will always be my
pal. I just hope she lives 30 years! Impossible of course, but I would never
tire of her companionship. Life goes on.
