...Checking the Weather Beetle...

GOOD MORNING! Anybody out there got a weather beetle? In our zest for all
of today's weather technology, I think we have to remind ourselves to
remember to read the skies. Certainly satellites and radar and computers
have improved forecasting immeasurably, but keeping an eye to the skies is
still irreplaceable in forecasting. Just ask Granny from the Beverly
Hillbillies! See today's Weather Talk for more about Cecil.

SATURDAY FORECAST: A warm, humid airmass covers Alabama on this Saturday
morning. With all the moisture in place, widely scattered thunderstorms
will develop with the heating of the day, despite the presence of a ridge of
high pressure over the state. Some areas that are right under any slow
moving storms that develop may get some brief heavy rainfall. Highs today
will reach 90 in a few locations. Any storms that develop will diminish
during the evening hours.

EYE ON SUNDAY/MONDAY: By tomorrow, the upper ridge will nudge a little to
the east, subtly enhancing the chances of convection. In addition, a
backdoor cold front
will be sliding down the east side of the Appalachians, approaching Alabama
from the northeast. This will enhance storms chances, especially over
eastern sections of the state. Next, the models try to bring a cold front
into Alabama from the northwest starting Monday. That is a little doubtful,
but it could help to enhance rain chances.

REST OF THE WEEK: A disturbed weather area over the Northwest Caribbean may
develop a surface low as it moves into the Gulf. It would head toward the
Florida Panhandle by Tuesday. This could really make things wet in the
Tuesday/Wednesday time frame. We will watch this system carefully. The
ridge of high pressure tries to re-establish itself for the latter part of
the week, lessening our chances for precipitation and clouds and pushing
temperatures back toward 90 degrees.

OZONE ALERT: The Air Quality Index in the Jefferson/Shelby area is in the
YELLOW alert category today and tomorrow.
