GOOD AFTERNOON! A very unusual upper air pattern over North America on this
early summer Saturday. The western half of the continent is dominated by a
gigantic ridge of high pressure that extends all the way into Alaska and the
Yukon Territories of Canada. This ridge has been acting as a huge heat
pump, transporting warm air northward. Records have been falling like flies
over western Canada, where readings well in the 90s have been breaking long
standing records by as much as 18 degrees! The eastern half of the country
is dominated by a large trough hat is trying to bump up against the huge
subtropical ridge sitting off the Southeast coast. Alabama has been in the
battle zone between the cool Canadian high to the north and the juicy
tropical airmass over our area. The result has been a nice, wet week. It
looks like we will have continued better than average rain chances for the
foreseeable future, although the demise of a weak upper circulation over
Texas should thin the showers and storms out and return us to more of a
normal summertime afternoon/evening thunderstorm pattern for he coming work
week.

FRONT FOCUSING SHOWERS/STORMS: Player one in our weather today is a weak,
diffuse front between Birmingham and Huntsville. This front has been the
focus for the development of showers and a few thunderstorms. The storms
are efficient rain makers, and slow movers to boot, so any communities that
get underneath them may see some rather heavy rainfall amounts. Flash
flood warnings were in effect earlier today over parts of Northwest Alabama.

The USGS gauge at Livingston picked up 2 inches of rain this morning, with
two inches falling between 4:30 and 7:30 a.m. The Sucarnoochie River jumped
from 4 feet to nearly 12 feet. It is cresting at about 14 feet. Flood stage
is 18 feet.

PLAYER #2: A disturbance spreading out of Louisiana and southern
Mississippi is accompanied by an area of showers and thunderstorms that is
heading northeast towards Central Alabama. If it holds together, it will
mean another round of showers and storms late this afternoon and this
evening across the mid section of the state.

SUNDAY: More showers and thunderstorms will develop later tonight and
Sunday. Some decent rainfall amounts will fall across Central Alabama
between now and Sunday evening. Rain chances should begin to thin out some
as we head into the new work week.

TROPICS: Things continue to be very quiet in the Atlantic basin. Three
tropical waves are evident on satellite pictures: one over the western
Caribbean, one near the Lesser Antilles and one over the far eastern
Atlantic off Africa. These troughs of low pressure look impressive when
they move off the African coast, but they cannot sustain themselves on the
cooler waters in the eastern Atlantic this early in the season. That will
change as the water warms as we head into August/September. The western
Pacific remains very active, with two tropical storms in progress. Both
Mindulle and Ting-Ting are expected to become typhoons, but will remain over
open ocean.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: A spectacular waterspout over the south end of the
Great Salt Lake was visible for 20 miles. It would last four minutes. -
