...Typical June Weather...

It is that time of the year when small scale weather features
determine the amount of showers and storms we see on a daily basis in the
maritime tropical air that parks over Alabama. And, the synoptic scale
computer models we use don't have the resolution to handle those features at
all. So, you usually hear these terms from us weather folks that explain
increased shower and thunderstorm activity: "perturbation", "impulse",
"outflow boundary", "ripple", and the longtime favorite "upper level
disturbance". The bottom line is that forecasting daily coverage of showers
and storms in the summer is very difficult, if not impossible over 12 hours
in advance.

That is pretty much where we stand this morning. Very humid air will
cover the state for the foreseeable future, and we do expect scattered
showers and storms on a daily basis. When the main catalyst for the storms
is the daytime heating process, which is pretty much what we expect today,
then most of the showers will come from about 2:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m.
We see no well defined small scale feature to enhance storms through
mid-week, but again, those features are almost impossible to identify until
they begin to interact with the moist air.

The air aloft over Alabama is expected to be a bit cooler by the end
of the week and the weekend, which means showers and storms could be more
numerous by then. But, of course, there will be some decent intervals of
sunshine between those summer showers.

MISSISSIPPI RAIN: A number of roads flooded in east Mississippi
around Columbus and West Point yesterday morning. Golden Triangle Airport
measured 1.09", but NEXRAD data suggested some places saw up to four inches
of rain.
