...Still Warm; Still Humid...
A familiar forecast for Alabama today. Warm and steamy; some good periods of
sunshine, and a few storms this afternoon in widely separated spots.
Temperatures will generally peak in the upper 80s, just about where we
should be for this part of June. The chance of any one spot getting wet this
afternoon is about one in four.
A plume of deeper tropical moisture is expected to creep in here from the
west tomorrow, which should mean an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms. Then, for Friday and the weekend, we will pretty much stick
with the standard story for the early part of "meteorological summer" in
Alabama.
Summer will "officially arrive", in astronomical terms, on June 20 at 7:57
p.m. That is our longest day of the year in terms of the number of daylight
hours.
HEAT RETURNS: Demopolis was one of the warmest places in Alabama yesterday,
where our Neighborhood Weathernet station reported a high of 93 degrees.
Montgomery was not far behind with 92, Muscle Shoals hit 91, while Calera,
Troy, and Decatur had a high of 90. Birmingham's official high was 87.
OZONE: A code yellow forecast continues for Jefferson and Shelby counties
today, meaning air quality is expected to be moderate.
TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is very quiet and tropical storm formation is
not expected for the next several days. The first named storm of the season
will be "Alex".
HANGING OUT THE WASH: Houston, TX was soaked with 2.05" of rain yesterday.
Hottest place in the nation was Gila Bend, AZ with 105. Birmingham's rain
deficit for the year is now four and a half inches (4.54").
