...More Rain On The Way...

A relatively difficult forecast ahead for Alabama for the next few days.
This morning a thunderstorm complex over Mississippi is making steady
progress to the east, and it looks like much of central Alabama will see a
round of rain and thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening if the
complex holds together. Another large area of rain is falling over the
southern third of the state. Some minor flooding has been reported over
Mobile and Baldwin counties, and a flash flood watch has been posted over
southwest Alabama where additional rain amounts of 2 to 4 inches are
possible.

The rain will diminish tonight as the impulse moves to the east. The
computer models are all over the road concerning the possibility of more
rain tomorrow, for now we will take a middle of the road approach and
forecast scattered showers and storms.

The latest model data also suggests much drier air moving in here for
Thursday and Friday, and we have removed the chance of rain for both of
those days. Humidity levels should drop a good bit by the end of the week;
that doesn't happen very often in June in Alabama, but we went and bit the
bullet and have forecast a day on Friday that is not as humid. Early morning
temperatures might even dip into the upper 50s over parts of north Alabama
if this is correct.

THE WEEKEND: The air should remain rather dry on Saturday, but moisture
surges northward by Sunday and a few afternoon showers or storms might show
up by then.

BAMA STORMS: Following a survey by the NWS office in Huntsville, it was
determined that five small tornadoes, all in the F0-F1 category, touched
down across the Tennessee Valley in the pre-dawn hours Monday.

In the Birmingham metro, there was extensive tree and power line damage, and
some structural damage from straight line thunderstorm winds around 4:30
a.m. Monday. Some of the hardest hit areas included Bluff Park, Titusville,
and Hueytown. We measured a peak wind gust of 57 mph at the ABC 33/40
Weathernet station on the press box of Legion Field.

TROPICAL TIME: The 2004 hurricane season begins today in the Atlantic basin.
The first named storm of the season will be called "Alex".
