ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Sunday January 17, 2010

BELIEVE

When you hear the name "Jesus," what comes to your mind?

Do you think of Him as a good man, a teacher of morals...or
as the Savior, Lord and Treasure of your life? What you believe
about Jesus determines how you live your life...from the way
you treat people...to what you treasure most.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover.
We'll look at what it means to truly believe...and why it matters.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway (Hwy 150)
in Hoover. Sunday service times are 8:05, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.

...Coldest First Half of January Ever...

The first fifteen days of January are officially the coldest first half ever of the first month of the year in Birmingham. With an average temperature of 29.7F, it is the coldest first 15 days of January in Magic City history. It is over 2.5 degrees colder than the second coldest first half of the month, which had previously been 1970.

JANUARY THAW: We are in the middle of a nice little January thaw. After the protracted cold snap that has lasted since New Year's, the current fairly seasonable temperatures seem positively balmy. The airmass that will be left over Alabama in the wake of today's surface low will be mild. 60s will be common for daytime highs as we move through the week ahead, along with a couple of decent rainfall events.

RAINFALL DEFICIT: Two words we don't like to ear used in conjunction with each other. We have quietly built a decent deficit as we have started 2010. Rainfall in the I-20 corridor averaged a little more than one half inch. Higher amounts were observed to the north and south. Alston Keith reported 1.80 inches of rain at his hunting camp in Industry in South Central Alabama. Muscle Shoals picked up 1.56 inches.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A ridge of high pressure will build over Alabama for the next two days before our next weathermaker heads this way on Wednesday. Most of the day should be dry, but rain and isolated storms will enter the state Wednesday night and last into Thursday morning. Rainfall amounts should average an inch or so in Central Alabama, with higher amounts to the south. Friday looks like a nice day, but another, more powerful system will be pushing our way for the weekend, brining more showers and storms to Alabama Saturday night and Sunday.

WESTERN STORM THIS WEEK: I was planning our summer vacation to the Central California coast last night, so this week's weather maps caught my eye. For a weather nut, this would be a good week to be there, with wind, high waves and lots of heavy rain.

WEATHERBRAINS: Corey Anne Walton from the National Hurricane Center joins the zoo on Monday night as the panel talks to stormchaser Dan Robinson about icy road safety. Subscribe to the show on iTunes, or try it out at www.WeatherBrains.com. Always free and always fun!

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: A storm system, unusually strong for the time of year, produces several tornadoes over Arkansas and western Tennessee, killing eight and injuring 131. Damage totaled $40 million. Hardest hit was Jackson, TN, where two separate tornadoes (one an F3, one an F4) struck the northern and southern sections of the town. 200 homes were destroyed, 300 others damaged. 6 people died in Jackson.
