...Rain Moving Out...
It was miserably cold and rainy across much of the area Saturday and Saturday night as a low pressure system moved out of the Gulf of Mexico and northward into Mississippi. Rainfall amounts were not heavy, averaging about one half inch in the I-20 corridor. Amounts were heavier over Northwest Alabama, where Hamilton had already tallied over an inch by 10 p.m. The low will continue to track northeast today, crossing into northern Georgia by lunchtime. A little bit of light rain will be possible at times during the day today and clouds should hang tough until evening. Highs today will struggle to get much above 50 degrees with the clouds and light rain.
NICER WEATHER FOR THE HOLIDAY: As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday holiday tomorrow, sunshine will be returning. The airmass left behind by this storm system will be quite mild, and temperatures over the next few days will frequently reach the 60s during the afternoons. After a seasonably chilly low in the 30s Monday morning, expect a high around 60F.
REST OF THE WORK WEEK: Tuesday will be an even prettier day, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the middle 60s on average as the upper level pattern over Alabama flattens out briefly. But weather maps will already be in the process of changing by Tuesday as another powerful storm system drops over into the Plains states. Evening model runs were faster and stronger with this system, which will bring rain back into Alabama by Wednesday afternoon or evening. Rainfall could be heavy Wednesday night, with most spots picking up 1 to 2 inches of rain. The rain will linger into Thursday morning, but should be gone by lunchtime. Skies will be rather slow to clear, waiting until evening to do so.
WEEKEND STORM SYSTEM: The departure of the midweek storm will set the stage for a nice Friday across Central Alabama with returning sunshine and highs near 60 degrees. But again, even as we enjoy some pleasant weather, chance will already be undereway by Friday afternoon as another powerful storm system moves out of the Rockies. This will spread rain and storms into Alabama mostly likely Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
WEATHERBRAINS: Kevin Selle warns that we have to reserve several minutes for the biggest rant in WeatherBrains history. What can that be about? Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Subscribe on iTunes or listen at www.WeatherBrains.com.
ON THIS DATE IN 1982: As the East was in the Deep Freeze, a terrific chinook wind was buffeting the Colorado foothills. It would be the most damaging windstorm in Colorado history. Nearly half of the buildings in Boulder CO were damaged. The National Center for Atmospheric Research recorded a wind gust to 137 mph. The wind gusted to at least 120 mph twenty times during the early morning hours. 17 people are injured. Twenty planes are flipped over at Boulder airport. $4 million in damage in Bouder and $17 million across the state. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
