MORE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS: I have no idea the monetary value of
the rain Alabama has received in the last several days. I think a
billion dollars would be extremely conservative. Just think of all
the crops that have been rescued, to some extent, and the zillions of
lawns that did not have to be watered for several days in a row and
the increasing run off into rivers and reservoirs, which all of the
water works people should be dancing a jig about.

Mind you, this is not a cure all. If it were to stop raining soon and
the temperature soar back into the 90s, we would be in the same old
pickle once again. We do not think that will happen. The number of
showers and thunderstorms will vary from day to day, but we have at
least some in the forecast for the rest of this week at least.

Looking ahead, there are some indications that a weak front will try
to visit us on Friday and possibly stall somewhere over Central
Alabama. This could lessen the number of showers by Friday afternoon,
but not completely eliminate them.

THE DROUGHT SITUATION: Yes, siree, we are still in a drought, but we
are very happy about the welcome rain for the past several days. The
latest figures showing rain deficit for various cities:

17.54 at Birmingham Airport
15.09 in Montgomery
20.25 in Anniston
20.71 at Tuscaloosa Airport
18.38 at Huntsville Airport

TODAY'S STORMS: Some tremendous rain reports from storms today. At
one point, the Lamar County EMA Office reported 2 feet of water on
Highway 18 in the vicinity of Vernon. We had a report from Sylacauga
that most automobiles had to pull over on US-280 because of the
blinding rain. A paramedic in Perry County reported the wind so
strong that it was difficult to keep his ambulance on the road. Over
1 inch of rain has fallen today at Jemison and nearly 1 inch in Fayette.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Would you believe that 300,000 acres in
Central Utah has been burned over by a wildfire? That is an all-time
record for the State of Utah. However, wildfires were raging in 10
western states. The heat goes on in the Desert Southwest, but not
quite as severe as a few days ago. Yesterday it got up to 110 in Las
Vegas and 107 in Phoenix. The hottest in the nation was 120 in Death
Valley. Coolest this morning was 38 at Stanley, Idaho....
