Alabama's "heat wave" will subside during the latter half of the week as an
approaching surface front and colder air aloft set the stage for scattered
to numerous showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday. High
temperatures will drop into the upper 80s, which is below normal for late
July in Alabama. For now we believe the surface front will hang up somewhere
near the Alabama/Tennessee state line late in the week, which could keep our
weather a bit unsettled going into the weekend. But again, the heat will be
in check due to the cloudy periods and showers.
TODAY: Any storms this afternoon should be quite isolated, and with hazy
sunshine the mercury will rise into the 91 to 95 degree range again today
for most Alabama communities. The heat index will exceed 100 in spots by
afternoon.
OZONE ALERT: A code orange ozone alert remains in effect for the Birmingham
metro area today (Jefferson and Shelby counties), meaning air quality will
be unhealthy for sensitive groups of people, like those with respiratory
problems.
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: The blistering heat has been replaced by a fresh
supply of cool air from Canada up north. In Bismarck, ND yesterday the high
was only 66 degrees, just one day after they were in the 90s. In Omaha, NE,
where the high yesterday was 102, today's forecast high is only 75. At 3
o'clock this morning it was 39 degrees and visibility 1/4 mile in heavy snow
on Monarch Pass in Central Colorado. Elevation, of course, plays a big part
in Colorado weather. Denver has recently suffered through several days in a
row with 100+ heat including 105 that tied their all-time record.
Chamberlain, South Dakota had 110 degrees Sunday afternoon with a scorching
30 mph SW wind. Early this morning, it was 58 with a brisk north wind.
BAMA HEAT: Hot spots in Alabama yesterday were Tuscaloosa, Muscle Shoals,
and Decatur with 96 degrees. Birmingham's high was 94; the last time we had
a high of 95 or hotter was on September 12, 2002.
TROPICS: Tropical storm Franklin is stalled in the Atlantic between North
Carolina and Bermuda; it won't move much through tomorrow. The system should
be picked up by an upper trough and pushed out to sea late this week or over
the weekend.
