...Showers Still Possible...
Lets begin with some positive news. The rain deficit in Birmingham, which
was about five and a half inches just five days ago, is now down to 1.73"
thanks to the soaking rains over the past few days. Birmingham's total rain
for the month of May was 5.62", with almost four inches of that coming
during the last three days of the month.
With lots of moist air still in place, we will maintain a good chance of a
few passing showers or storms today. But, the sun might peek out a bit, and
it won't rain all day. Then tomorrow, as the upper trough moves to the east
of the state, sinking air on the back side of the trough will mean a
relatively dry day. Any showers should be very widely spaced, and there
should be a decent amount of sunshine for a change as temperatures get back
into the low 80s.
THE WEEKEND: Looks like an early summer mix of sun and scattered showers on
Saturday and Sunday. The best chance of showers or storms will come during
the afternoon hours, and temperatures will rise into the mid 80s. The latest
model data suggests afternoon showers might be a little more numerous on
Sunday.
WEDNESDAY'S SOAKERS: Rain totals around the state yesterday included 3.02"
at Bessemer, 2.74" at Nauvoo, 2.28" at Parrish, 2.38" at Cottondale, 2.03"
at Hamilton, 2.02" at Huffman, 2.01" at Black Creek (Etowah County near
Gadsden), 1.96" at Jasper, and 1.84" at Muscle Shoals.
WET MICROBURST SEASON: The NWS in Birmingham has proclaimed this as the
beginning of the "wet microburst season" in Alabama. These very short term
damaging winds coming from summer thunderstorms account for 70 percent of
wind related severe weather events here June through September.
