...Arlene Is Our Problem...
GOOD MORNING! Arlene will bring a bag of trouble, including strong winds,
very heavy rains and possible tornadoes as it moves inland later today and
up into Alabama tonight and Sunday morning.
COASTAL IMPACTS: Arlene should make landfall this afternoon between
Pascagoula and Pensacola, likely around Mobile Bay. A storm surge of 3-5
feet will affect coastal sections near and east of where the center makes
landfall. This may reach some structures along the shoreline, especially
where dune line erosion from Hurricane Ivan exists. Winds will increase to
tropical storm force (40 mph or greater) this morning along the coast and
rise to near hurricane force this afternoon and tonight, diminishing Sunday
morning. Tornadoes will also occur, especially north and east of the
center.
CENTRAL ALABAMA IMPACTS: South of the US-80 corridor, winds tonight and
Sunday morning will reach 30-40 mph sustained with gusts to near 50 mph.
Further north, in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham areas, winds will increase
to around 15-25 mph after midnight with occasional gusts above 30 mph,
continuing Sunday morning. You will want to bring in any outdoor items that
might blow around in strong winds.
Heavy rains will spread northward with the storm, with coverage and
intensity gradually increasing along with embedded thunderstorm activity.
The heaviest rains will fall Saturday night and Sunday morning, just east of
the track, mainly from Linden to Demopolis to Hamilton westward, where 4-8
inches is possible, with isolated 10 inch amounts not out of the question.
The rest of Central Alabama should see 2-4 inches of rain from Arlene.
Flash flooding is a distinct possibility and a Flash Flood Watch has been
issued for all of Central Alabama. Trees will likely be toppled by the
combination of strong winds and wet ground, so power failures will be
possible. Tornadoes will also be possible over Central sections of the
state as the center moves north. All Alabama residents should monitor the
latest into on Arlene.
