...Wet Is Still The Word...

Much of Alabama should get a good soaking during the next 36 to 48 hours thanks to a stalled surface front, and a series of waves moving along the front. Communities south of I-20 can expect one to two inches of rain, while north of I-20, around one inch is likely. There is an outside risk of a few severe thunderstorms over the southern third of the state today, but stable air remains in place up this way and we don’t expect any problems with severe storms.

The coverage of showers and thunderstorms will gradually decrease on Thursday and Friday as warmer air aloft moves over the region and the front dissipates. But, there will still be sufficient moisture for scattered showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures will also warm up, with mid 80s like by Thursday and Friday, right at normal levels for early June in Alabama.

DRY TO THE NORTH: While Birmingham has received over two and a half inches of rain during the past two days, amounts to the north have been much lighter. The ABC 33/40 Weather Watcher in Nauvoo, in Walker County, measured only 0.02” yesterday, and the total so far in May is a meager 1.30”.

A COOL MAY DAY: Birmingham’s high yesterday was only 69 degrees, 15 degrees below normal for Memorial Day. Up in northeast Alabama, the high was a cool 64 at both Crossville and Fort Payne.

TEXAS STORMS: Houston was soaked with 3.62” of rain yesterday producing flooding. A tornado touched down near Houston in Meyerland, producing major damage at an apartment complex resulting in two injuries. Winds gusted to 60 mph on Galveston Island.
