...Drier Weather For the Weekend...
Showers and thunderstorms will highlight our forecast package for Alabama today. The rain is the result of an upper air trough dropping south through the state, an approaching cold front, and a good supply of moist air in the low levels of the atmosphere. Rainfall amounts should average one inch, but some spots could see a little more. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk of severe thunderstorms today, but wind fields are relatively weak and a major severe weather event is not very likely. The showers and storms should end by midnight tonight.
THE WEEKEND: Drier air returns just in time for the weekend; we are forecasting ample sunshine tomorrow and Sunday, with afternoon highs in the low 80s.
NEXT WEEK: A cold front will pass through the state early Monday, but we will mention only a small risk of a shower due to limited moisture. Cooler and drier air will settle in here by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
AT THE BEACH: A few scattered showers and storms along the central Gulf coast today, but the weekend should be mostly rain-free with highs in the low to mid 80s. The water temperature is running right at 80 degrees along the Alabama coastline.
ADRIAN: Hurricane Adrian moved into El Salvador last night from the eastern Pacific Ocean, packing sustained winds of 80 mph. Serious flooding and mudslides are likely in parts of Central America this morning. While the systems circulation will fall apart over land, what is left of the system will emerge into the Caribbean later today, moving northeast. Upper air winds do not favor any strengthening in the Caribbean, and it should not enter the Gulf of Mexico.
