GOOD AFTERNOON: What does a weather nerd like me do on New Years Night?
Sit around and watch amazing video from Jesse Bass and Mark Sudduth. Mark
and Jesse operate the website HurricaneTrack.com.
The pair spent the 2004 Hurricane Season tracking Alex, Bonnie, Charley,
Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. The video was compelling to say the least, and
amazing overall. They rode out Hurricane Charley under an overpass on I-75
at Port Charlotte and shot video from inside the eye, recording a 127 mph
wind gust. They placed a specially instrumented Izusu Rodeo in the parking
lot of the public pier at Gulf Shores as Hurricane Ivan made landfall.
Fascinating stuff.
INTERESTING FORECAST: The forecast is not quite as interesting as Tracking
the Hurricanes, but it has its merits. Try at least four more days of
temperatures some 15-20 degrees above normal for early January. Try a nice,
balmy southerly wind flow. Try very small rain chances through Tuesday.
Add in a tenacious cold front battling a strong subtropical ridge, and you
have the makings of a winner at the box office. Top it off with a stronger
storm system around the 14th that will bring a big change to colder and some
interesting forecasts for winter weather fans. That's our forecast in a
nutshell.
RECORD TEMPERATURES: HOME: Generally, whenever you have temperatures that
are twenty degrees above or below normal, records are in the offing. By 2
p.m., Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery had already set their record
highs for the date with 73, 71 and 77 degrees respectively.
RAIN CHANCES/CLOUDS: With moist air in place, and those southerly winds
busily bringing in more, any little ripple in the atmosphere can set off
some showers. But those chance look to be relatively small through Tuesday.
Clouds will be a fact of life through much of this forecast. But there will
be plenty of sunshine at most times also.
THE FRONT: A cold front will approach Alabama on Wednesday. This will set
off a round of showers and thunderstorms during the overnight hours on
Wednesday, lasting into Thursday morning. The front will bring cooler
conditions on Thursday. But the front will turn back north, bringing back
rain for the weekend.
RECORD TEMPERATURES: AWAY: At least fourteen record warm minimums for
January 1st were broken yesterday, including 63 at Dallas, 55 at Evansville,
IN, 58 at Joplin, MO, and 49 at Medicine Lodge, KS. There were several
record highs yesterday, including 78 at Lufkin, TX.
ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Heavy rains and melting snow caused disastrous
flooding the West, closing Reno's casinos for the first time in memory and
forcing thousands to flee their homes. Seven inches of rain resulted in the
worst flooding in the famous gambling city in forty years. Reno's airport
was closed for two days. Many roads were closed across parts of the West.
Flooding on the Merced River in California trapped 2500 people in Yosemite
National park.
