...Smashing Records...

GOOD MORNING! Temperatures soared well into the 70s across most of
Alabama on Sunday, breaking a few records along the way. The only official
reporting station in the state that stayed below 70 was Desoto State Park,
which registered 68 degrees. The 74 at Birmingham established a new record
high for January 2nd. Likewise, the 72 at Huntsville, 73 at Muscle Shoals
and 78 in Montgomery.

MORE RECORDS TODAY? Lots of sunshine allowed the extra bit of
warmth to break those records yesterday. Skies cleared out on the backside
of an upper level disturbance. Another disturbance is passing well to the
north and west of Alabama this morning. Once again, temperatures will be
warm across the area today. If we get a good bit of sunshine, more records
may fall today. There may be a few showers this morning over Northwest
Alabama, but shower chances the rest of today and Tuesday will be small.

MIDWEEK FRONT: A cold front will approach Alabama from the
northwest on Wednesday. It will find a tough go against the unusually
strong subtropical ridge, and it will become stationary across Central
Alabama before coming north again as a warm front. This means that
temperatures will cool briefly behind the front on Thursday and Friday, but
will be back well above normal by Saturday. It looks like rain chances may
stay with us through the weekend.

REVOLUTIONARY FORECAST: In December 1776, things were bleak for the
Americans. The British had overrun New Jersey. General Washington was on
the defensive. He crossed the icy Delaware on the night of the 26th and
surprised the British at Trenton. But Cornwallis' stronger force was
marching towards General Washington and his men. The ground had become soft
with a thaw and heavy rain, which made it difficult for either force to
move. But on the afternoon of the 2nd, Washington used his extensive
weather knowledge to predict that a hard freeze that night would harden the
mud and give him the opportunity to use the opportunity of surprise again
and escape the British pincers.
