GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a rather springlike afternoon across the area
on this Sunday, with warm temperatures, variably cloudy skies and a
southwesterly breeze. A few widely scattered showers have been breaking out
since late morning across North Central sections of the state.
ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A stationary front is located over the Tennessee
Valley area of North Alabama. It extends back into Central Texas, where it
is kinking up and low pressure is forming. At the jet stream level, we find
a deep trough of low pressure over the southwestern United States. This
trough will move east over the next four days.
FORECAST RATIONALE: The low pressure that is expected to form over Texas
will move into southwestern Missouri by Monday morning. The stationary
front over Alabama will retreat back to the north as a warm front. Alabama
will continue to be in the warm sector of the storm system. For the
remainder of this afternoon and tonight, you can expect partly to
occasionally mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of showers, and maybe
a thunderstorm. But those rain chances will be slim. Monday should feature
a warm and partly cloudy day.
By Tuesday morning, Election Day, the front will be over western Tennessee
and northern Mississippi. At that time, showers and thunderstorms will be
edging into northwestern sections of the state. A line of showers and
thunderstorms will push into Alabama during the day on Tuesday. There had
been some thought that this activity could be on the strong side, but that
does not appear as likely at this time.
We originally thought that the storm system would be through the state by
Wednesday morning, but now the models hint that it may hang up long enough
to wait for another low pressure system to form and move across the area.
By Wednesday morning, that low will be over Northwest Alabama, which will
keep us wet for much of Wednesday. By Thursday morning, the low should be
off the South Carolina coast and cooler air will be well entrenched over the
Deep South.
It looks like nice weather will be in store for the area on Thursday.
Friday will see a reinforcing shot of cool air arriving in the area. Next
weekend could feature the coolest air we have seen since last spring.
ON THIS DATE IN 1876: Viewed to be the worst cyclone to have moved across
the Bay of Bengal during the 19th Century, the Backergunge Cyclone
devastated the northeast coast of India, killing 100,000 people. The city
of Backergunge, (now Barisal, Bangladesh) was inundated by the 40 foot storm
surge of the cyclone, destroying nearly all of its 1700 buildings. The Bay
of Bengal is shaped like a funnel, and as a cyclone pushes its storm surge
into the narrowing bay, the surge is able to rise to dramatic heights.
There was a telegraphic warning service being developed by the India
Meteorological Department, but it had not been extended to the port of
Backergunge. Experts contend that a cyclone similar to the this storm today
might kill one million people.
