WAY TOO WARM: If the high temperature Saturday reaches 84 as forecast, it
will be about 15 degrees above normal for October 30! This extended period
of abnormal warmth will continue over the weekend, but we will have a
cooling off early next week. We still don't see anything exceptionally cool
like it should be this time of year, but we could have some upper 40s at
night later next week.

There are mixed signals on when our best chance of rain will be. Originally
we thought election day may be rain free. It doesn't look that way any more.
A significant low pressure area, moving out of the west, will be centered
over Texas and Arkansas Monday morning and possibly over Louisiana and
Mississippi Tuesday morning. This will keep us under the threat of showers
and thunderstorms until cooler and drier air starts moving in Tuesday night
and Wednesday morning. There are some indications that our best chance of
rain could come on election day. We will be able to define that more closely
later.

We think the risk of showers Saturday will be rather small with a slightly
better chance Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. We are still hanging on to
our best chance of showers and storms on Monday and Tuesday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent chance that almost all high school stadiums
will remain dry for tonight's games. Temperatures should be in the 70s. In
college football, the Magic City Classic will be played at 3:00 p.m.
Saturday at Legion Field between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. Look for
very warm mid 80s at kick off and only a slight chance of a shower or
thunderstorm. Auburn will play Ole Miss in Oxford Saturday night. It should
be about 78 for the 6:45 p.m. kick off and about 72 at the end of the game
but there is a risk of a shower or thunderstorm.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: Don't forget Storm Alert Xtreme at the downtown
Birmingham Civic Center starting at 9:30 Saturday morning. Come early to get
a good seat. You can be in storm spotter classes, get a briefing on Ivan and
see some awesome tornado chase pictures by Bill Murray...still a lot of snow
in the mountain west with 41 inches now on the ground at Brian Head in South
Utah (it's a ski area)...25 inches covers the ground on the Kolob Plateau
above Zion National Park...a few low temperatures this morning: 20 in
Leadville, Colorado and 17 in Berlin, New Hampshire...don't forget we go
back to standard time at 2:00 a.m. Sunday...most weather humans like that
better, because it gives us more time. You see, weather observations around
the world pay no attention to Daylight Saving Time. This means that we have
one extra hour to chew and spit out all of that raw weather data and arrive
at a decision. Besides all that, all of my body parts matriculate much
better on Standard time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Still getting a lot of e-mails about little
Miss Molly needing a playmate...there is no doubt she would go bonkers to
have another puppy to play with. Also another sad note from Clay County,
where one of our readers saw her dog's brother get run over and killed by a
car...it's a hard thing to get over. I believe if little Miss Molly were to
die or get killed, I would throw in the towel on ever owning another dog. I
know that's not the right attitude, but I can't imagine it happening. Life
would go on, but sadly so.
