...Slight Risk of Severe Thunderstorms Today...

6:30 AM UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for the
Tennessee Valley of north Alabama until 8:00 a.m. A line of very strong
storms is located from near Tupelo to Huntsville to Scottsboro, and is
drifting southward. The main problem seems to be shifting to flash flooding,
with some spots have now received well over two inches of rain. Flash flood
warnings are in effect for a number of counties in the Tennessee Valley.

DISCUSSION: Some active weather is possible across Alabama today, and our
forecast package will highlight a good chance of showers and a few
thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be severe thanks to a pocket of
colder air aloft passing over a very unstable airmass. Also, some leftover
small scale boundaries from last night's storms could enhance thunderstorm
development. SPC has about the northern half of Alabama in a slight risk of
severe storms for today.

Some beneficial rain is possible, but the rain will probably not be
distributed very evenly. Some places could see over one inch in the heavier
storms, but that will probably be isolated. Average rainfall amounts of
one-half inch are more likely statewide.

WARMING UP: After today, the weather looks basically dry and quite warm for
October for the latter half of the week. We will mention only a slight risk
of a stray shower tomorrow, and we should be rain-free on Thursday and
Friday as warmer air aloft caps off the atmosphere. Temperatures should rise
into the low and mid 80s, almost ten degrees above normal.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The longer range models suggest a weak cold front will try
to ease in here, which might trigger a few showers Saturday night or Sunday.
For now it looks like the best dynamics will stay to our north, so rainfall
should be light and spotty. Temperatures will back off a bit by Sunday, but
we see no sign of any really cool air for the next seven days or so.

STORMY MONDAY: Three people had minor injuries when a severe storm damaged a
mobile home community north of Florence yesterday afternoon. The damage was
probably from a small tornado. A number of storm spotters witnessed a
tornado as the parent thunderstorm moved across Lauderdale county.
