...Changes Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! I just had to step outside at about 10 p.m. last night just
to enjoy nature's sound and light show. No, no thunderstorms in the area.
Only hazy, clear skies filled with beautiful planets and stars. A symphony
of crickets and cicadas and other insects, accompanied by the sound of my
grass growing. You see, my mower specially chose last week to go on the
blink, since it knew that the local mower shop was on vacation.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: The upper level high pressure system that has
been holding sway over Alabama this past few days is sliding westward this
morning, as if on schedule according to our forecasts. The clockwise flow
around the high is already turning our upper level winds round to the
northwest. This will have significant bearing on Alabama weather this week.


THE WEEK AHEAD: Yesterday, we talked about the "ring of fire" around high
pressure that was centered over Alabama. Today will find us on the edge,
rather than in the middle, of the "ring of fire." In fact, with
northwesterly winds aloft, we will be susceptible to disturbances in the
flow that can help to set off thunderstorms. Today and Tuesday will feature
scattered thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoons and early evenings.

The trough over the East that will set up this week will allow a front to
push southward, likely passing through much of Alabama by Thursday. This
means increasing precipitation chances and less humid weather in the wake of
the front for Friday and Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: An important reminder about lightning. It does not
have to be raining where you are standing for lightning to strike. Rain was
not falling at the golf course in Tucson AZ where a golfer was struck and
killed by an isolated lightning bolt from a storm three miles away.
