...Another Hot One...

GOOD MORNING! Johnny Cash sang, "I fell into a burning ring of fire..."
That's what the national composite radar looked like last evening if you
focused on Alabama. The state was in the middle of a "ring of fire" of
thunderstorms that were occurring around high pressure centered over the
state. Storms were evident from Kentucky to North Carolina, over Georgia
and Florida, more over Louisiana and Arkansas, but Alabama was high and dry.
You get the picture. It's going to look a lot like that again today and
probably Monday, as high pressure suppresses thunderstorm development. The
intense July solar insolation and lack of precipitation will allow
temperatures to soar into the lower and middle 90s. UV radiation will be
extremely high, heat indices will approach dangerous levels and air quality
will be in the yellow range. Hey! Welcome to summer in Alabama.

WEEK AHEAD: The upper level high pressure system will retrograde, or move
westward, to the vicinity of Texas by midweek. Alabama will gradually come
under the influence of a northwesterly flow aloft as a big trough of low
pressure sets up over the East Coast. This means that the door will be open
for a cold front to slide southward by Wednesday or Thursday. Fronts that
have the oomph to make it all the way into Alabama in July are rare, but if
the trough sets up like the models picture it, I could see the front sliding
into the state. Counting on this happening, I will call for increasing
chances of storms on Wednesday. Given that the front models might be a
little optimistic on the southward progress, that enhanced chance might
carry over into Thursday. But if the high builds in for late in the week,
we could have some fine weather in the Friday and Saturday time frame.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The Great Midwest Flood continued to rage. Flood
waters closed the Des Moines, Iowa water treatment plant, leaving the city's
250,000 residents without water for 12 days. The 1993 flood was the most
devastating in U.S. history.
