GOOD AFTERNOON! High pressure is trying valiantly to hold onto control of
Alabama's weather on this Sunday afternoon, but it is a losing battle. As
the high breaks down, it will be replaced by an approaching upper level
trough that will send a decent cold front our way by Tuesday. Showers and
storms are already more numerous than the past couple of days across the
northern half of the state. They will become even more prevalent tomorrow.
Look for drier, less humid conditions for midweek.
FORECAST DISCUSSION: All of the numerical weather prediction models are
picking up on a chance of showers and thunderstorms continuing during the
overnight hours tonight, so we will go along for the ride and include that
in our package. Northwest Alabama is under a Slight Outlook for Severe
Weather by the Storm Prediction Center. Tomorrow, all signs point to a good
chance of showers and thunderstorms as the upper high completely weakens and
the trough approaches.
The front should reach Alabama early on Tuesday, spelling an end to the
showers and storms during the morning hours. Skies will begin to clear
Tuesday afternoon and humidities will drop. We will see overnight lows in
the upper 60s Wednesday morning, which will be a bit of a relief from the
uncomfortable nighttime lows of the past few days. We will have to hold
onto a slight chance of mainly afternoon and evening storms on Wednesday and
Thursday, but they will be extremely isolated. Temperatures during this
time frame will be on target.
Moisture levels will begin to increase again by Friday as the Bermuda High
establishes itself as the dominating force in Alabama weather.
Correspondingly, those diurnal showers and storms will become more scattered
than isolated once again.
TROPICS: An interesting low pressure system to the east southeast of Cape
Hatteras, North Carolina has some potential for development over the next
day or so before it moves north northwestward over cooler water. There is a
tropical wave over the northwestern Caribbean, but if it were to develop, it
would only do so slowly.
MORE RECORD MANIA: Many locations across the Rockies and Plains states set
record low maximum temperatures yesterday, including 55F at Cheyenne, WY and
60 at Scottsbluff, NE. Some readings were as much as 30 degrees below
normal. It was 95F at the SEA-TAC airport in Seattle, which was a record
high for the date. 98F in Panama City yesterday was a record. Several
record lows were set this morning, including 48F at Pierre, SD. There, it
was the third straight record low.
ON THIS DATE IN 1609: The Jamestown expedition nearly comes to an untimely
end as the fleet of ships encounters a tropical storm while sailing
northwest through the Bahamas. One of the nine ships was sunk and the rest
of the fleet scattered as far north as Bermuda.
ON THIS DATE IN 1979: The dying remains of Tropical Storm Claudette dumped
43 inches of rain in 24 hours July 25-26 near Alvin, Texas to establish the
United States' 24 hour rainfall record. Freeport Texas recorded 30 inches.
Damage totaled $400 million.
