HEAT BECOMES THE MAIN STORY: The old thermometer has decided it wants to go
up and up and give us our hottest weather so far this season. We must
caution that the heat index over the next couple of days will exceed 100 and
possibly as high as 105 on Wednesday. We're calling for a high of 94 Tuesday
and 96 on Wednesday, which will be our highest temperature so far in 2004.
There is still a good chance that a "cold" front will reach this area by
Thursday. It's called a cold front on the weather map, but it will not
change our temperature much. Highs on Thursday and Friday should back off to
90 and early Friday morning it may be a few degrees cooler. You may also
notice a slight drop in humidity by Friday.
Scattered thunderstorms were developing over North Alabama this afternoon
and conditions are favorable for a few of those to be strong. There is even
a possibility that we could see a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings
later this afternoon or this evening. As the front approaches later
Wednesday, we may have another slight risk of a few severe thunderstorms.
TROPICAL WEATHER: The disturbed weather area that was over the SW Gulf of
Mexico, moved inland into Mexico without developing. This afternoon a
tropical wave was moving westward across the East-Central Caribbean. It has
weakened and should not develop.
AIR QUALITY: Again today, the Birmingham metro area was under a code
yellow, which means moderate air quality. Sensitive persons should avoid
overexertion.
MONDAY NOTES: Daytona was deluged with 3.43 inches of rain Sunday and
Jacksonville 2.55 inches...hot spots Sunday included 118 in Death Valley,
115 in Bullhead City, Arizona and 95 in Kaltag, Alaska...the coolest this
morning was 29 in Stanley, Idaho...on July 12, 1988, huge hailstones 4.5
inches in diameter fell at Monango and Fullerton, North Dakota. Patio
furniture looked as if it had been beaten by a sledge hammer.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My pal, little Miss Molly, is becoming a puppy
psychologist. She knows exactly how to get her way. When she wants to go
outside, she not only rings the bell, but shadows me constantly. Sometimes
when she rings the bell for her early morning walk, I still have to comb my
hair and put on my shoes. She will follow me to the bathroom and lie just
inside the door with her whole body as flat on the floor as possible and
with those sparkling eyes looking up at me. She wags her tail ever so
slowly. It is her signal that she is not going to let me forget. On a 10:30
walk last night, I walked into a spider web freshly built hanging from our
crape myrtle bush. I was frantically trying to get the spider web untangled
and slapping myself everywhere I thought I felt a spider. Those varmints
build those webs to catch some overnight bugs for breakfast. Little did they
know that they would catch the largest bug in the world (me!). But life goes
on. Spiders or no spiders.
