GOOD AFTERNOON! It's a beautiful July afternoon here in Alabama.
Temperatures across most of the area had reached the 90 degree mark by early
afternoon. Most areas were experiencing mostly sunny skies, but those
cumulus clouds were beginning to build up a little over the northern third
of the state. A couple of rogue showers had developed shortly after
lunchtime, one of them over Cullman County. But the areal coverage was tiny
and the budding convection was having a tough time surviving. Any showers
or storms that do develop will be very isolated in nature this afternoon.
TONIGHT: It should be a beautiful summer's evening across the area, with
fair skies to go with warm and humid conditions. Overnight lows will manage
only to drop into the lower 70s.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: By tomorrow, things they will be a changin', at least in
the all important upper air department. The upper air that is over Alabama
today will be drifting back westward, buckling the upper flow over the East.
On Monday, Alabama will be a little closer to the fire part of the "ring of
fire" around the upper high. This means an increase in shower and
thunderstorm chances. . In addition, Monday's weather may be influence by
a shortwave trough that will be rippling along in the upper level
streamflow. This system will be close enough to enhance thunderstorm
chances Monday afternoon into Monday night. We may have to up the rain
chances on Monday into the "decent" category. Tuesday should see fairly
typical "scattered" chances of mainly afternoon and evening storms. With a
full northwesterly flow pattern in place by Tuesday, we will have to watch
for the approach of thunderstorm complexes from the Midwest.

REST OF THE WEEK: A front will approach Alabama from the north on
Wednesday, increasing shower and storm chances by that time. The front is
forecast to push well into Alabama on Thursday. With the highly amplified
upper pattern in place, it is not hard to imagine that the front will cut
deeply into Alabama, regardless of the fact that it is July. This could
spell some pleasant conditions by Thursday and into the weekend, with lower
humidities. Moisture will start to return late in the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: Yankee slugger Roger Maris was in the middle of his
record home run campaign, with 33 home runs at the All Star break. The 1961
classic was played in Candlestick Park in San Francisco. As the players
warmed up before the game, they wondered where the famed Bay area winds had
gone. The first seven innings were played under beautiful conditions. But
the winds appeared late in the game. In the ninth, Giants pitcher Stu
Miller took the mound with a 3-2 for the senior circuit. Pitching to Rocky
Colavito with two on and one out, a gust of wind blew Miller off the mound
and caused a balk. The AL managed to tie the game in the inning, and then
take the lead in the tenth before the NL came back to win it in the 10th.
Many players stated that it was the worst conditions that they had ever
played in. After the game, Maris was quoted as saying, "If I had to play
here, I would ask to be traded."
