HOT AND UNCOMFORTABLE: That big complex of thunderstorms that formed in
Nebraska yesterday moved SE all day and reached North and Central Alabama
late in the afternoon. There was an amazing 212 reports of wind damage, but
by the time the storms reached Alabama, they weakened a bit. The storms were
moving quickly enough that rainfall was not that heavy. One of the heaviest
amounts was 0.85 at Haleyville where severe lightning also caused a house
fire. Down in Central Alabama, the temperature reached a hot 98 at
Wilsonville and Childersburg.
The weather pattern has changed a bit since yesterday. This should keep
clusters of strong thunderstorms well to the north of Alabama. Our chance of
seeing one late today and this evening is very small. Otherwise, there will
be scattered ones each day for the rest of the week and we believe the best
chance will come on Thursday.
With the high humidity and temperatures soaring into the low to mid 90s
tomorrow, the heat index in parts of Central Alabama could reach as high as
105. Highs will back off a few degrees for the rest of the week.
AIR QUALITY: We were under a code yellow in the Birmingham metro area today
and that is also forecast for Tuesday. The expected air quality index
tomorrow is 60, which is well within the moderate range. It means that
unusually sensitive people should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion
outdoors.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Still no threat of tropical development in the Atlantic
Basin. It's interesting to note that on this date in 1916, a very
destructive hurricane struck Mobile and Pensacola. Winds reached 82 mph.
Tides were nearly 12 feet above normal and the barometer at Ft. Morgan on
the Alabama coast dropped to an incredibly low 28.38 inches.
MONDAY NOTES: USA chill spots this morning included 33 at Stanley, Idaho
and at Hahns Peak, Colorado...I don't know why this fascinates me so, but at
Vostok, Anartica the thermometer was hanging out around 101 below zero
today. The wind chill was ranging from 120 to as low as 160 below.'tis the
season for lightning. On July 5, 1900, lightning caused a fire at the
Standard Oil Refinery in Bayonne, New Jersey. It burned for three days. One
person was killed.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has had a traumatic weekend.
On Saturday, we were having custom made bookshelves installed with a saw,
hammer, and air hammer, making lots of noise. She was very scared for hours.
She hunkered down in the most distant corner of the house that she could
find. Then Saturday night and last night, neighborhood fireworks kept her on
edge. We tried to hold her a lot and that helped a bit. On our early morning
walk, her little tongue was really hanging out when we got home because it
was so hot and humid early. But she saw some friends along the way and it
made it all worthwhile. Life goes on.
