GOOD AFTERNOON! I hope that you are one of the many Alabamians celebrating
this Independence Day with food and fun. It has turned out to be a
beautiful Fourth of July across much of the state with lots of sunshine and
warm temperatures. The only exceptions have been occasionally cloudy skies
over northern sections and exiting showers and storms over extreme Northeast
Alabama, both remnants of an upper trough that is grazing the Tennessee
Valley.

With all of the nice weather, it is hard to believe that a significant
severe weather threat is materializing for portions of North Alabama. A
complex of thunderstorms formed over Kansas and Nebraska last night has been
charging southeastward ever since. Severe thunderstorm watches and numerous
severe thunderstorm warnings have accompanied this system as it races
southeastward. Reports of widespread wind damage were being received at
late morning from parts of Arkansas.

This system should hold together and maybe even intensify as it feeds on
warm, moist and unstable air over Tennessee and northern Mississippi. On
its current track, it will sweep across North Alabama between 3 p.m. and 9
p.m. It will be accompanied by winds of 60 mph or higher and deadly
lightning.

Just how far south will it go? Development is occurring further to the
south in Mississippi and indicates that storms may spread across the
northern half of the state, so all areas north of Montgomery need to be
alert. Please make sure that you have a reliable source of weather
information with you throughout this afternoon and evening, especially if
you will be outdoors.

FIREWORKS FORECAST: This evenings thunderstorms could be a problem for
local fireworks displays in and around North Central Alabama. Hopefully,
the storms will stay to the north of Birmingham for the Thunder on the
Mountain display. We will try to be more specific as the weather
approaches.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Weak high pressure will dominate Alabama's weather for the
next two days. Skies will be fair to partly cloudy, with a good bit of
sunshine. Temperatures will warm to near 90 or just above. The combined
effects of heat and humidity will produce heat indices above 100 degrees.

People working or playing outside will warm to exercise caution to avoid
heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

REST OF THE WEEK: A front will approach Alabama from the north on
Wednesday, increasing shower and storm chances by that time. The front is
forecast to push well into Alabama on Thursday, keeping rain chances in the
forecast, perhaps into Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: 19 members of a single family were struck by a
lightning bolt during a Fourth of July evening fireworks display in Wilson
Park in Visalia NC. A bolt of lightning struck a construction crane,
crossed wet ground and surged through a fence, affecting 70 people
altogether. Fortunately, no was killed or seriously injured. It is
believed to be the most people ever struck by a single bolt of lightning.
