...A Hot One...

GOOD MORNING! Well, it turned out to be another busy Sunday in the weather
office. I knew we were in trouble when I saw the radar shortly after 7 a.m.
A big complex of thunderstorms was pushing into Arkansas. The flow over
Alabama had turned to northwesterly in the wake of an a slow moving upper
trough, and when that happens, you have to start looking to the northwest
for the possibility of such thunderstorm complexes. The complex raced
southeastward, targeting northern Alabama. There were over 100 reports of
wind damage across Arkansas, western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.
Fortunately, the storms lost some of their wind punch, but they still were
prodigious lightning producers. A house fire was reported in Haleyville due
to the intense lightning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A weak ridge of high pressure will continue to build into
Alabama today, effectively suppressing the development of showers and storms
for the most part. Only isolated storms are expected during the afternoon
and evening hours today and Tuesday. It will be quite warm, with readings
in the lower 90s both days and heat indices near 100 degrees. Use caution
if you are going to be involved in outdoor activities. A front will
approach Alabama from the north on Wednesday increasing our shower and storm
chances. Indications are that the front will settle into North Alabama on
Thursday, keeping the forecast damp. The front should not be like our last
one, sticking around forever. It will wash by the weekend, giving improving
conditions. But those ubiquitous summer time afternoon and evening storms
will stay with us.

ON THIS DATE IN 1916: Very destructive early season hurricane strikes
Mobile and Pensacola area. 7 deaths resulted from the Category 3 storm.
Winds reached 82 mph. Tides were 11.6 feet above normal at Mobile.
