...A Little Drier? Maybe...

GOOD MORNING! It turned out to be a busy Sunday in the weather office.
Early morning weather charts had indicated relatively strong winds in the
lower levels of the atmosphere back over Louisiana. These winds were
translated to the ground through the conduit of a mesoscale convective
complex (big batch of thunderstorms) as it moved across Louisiana and
Mississippi. Numerous reports of wind damage were received from Mississippi
as the system moved through.

If you had looked at a composite radar at mid afternoon, you would have seen
why they call them bow echoes. It looked like a huge archer's bow. As the
huge arc approached the Alabama border it was splitting into two separate
echoes. The southern bow weakened as it followed an earlier complex that
had moved across South Central Alabama. As the northern bow turned
northeastward into Pickens and Lamar County, it also began to weaken in
intensity. But the impressive winds stayed with it as it rolled through
Walker, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson and Shelby Counties. At BHM, winds gusted to
46 mph at 7:39 p.m.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The stubborn old front it still over North Alabama. Its
presence will provide a focus for more showers and storms today. I am
basing this forecast on an assumption that the front will slide south of
Birmingham on Tuesday, reducing our rain chances on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It will return north as a warm front on Thursday, increasing rain chances
again for the end of the week into the weekend.

AUDREY POSTSCRIPT: many of the residents of Cameron, Louisiana that
survived Hurricane Audrey in June 1957 remained bitter to their deaths, some
until even today. The Category 4 hurricane killed 390 people, ranking it
the 6th deadliest U.S. hurricane since 1900. Yet it remained rather
anonymous to this day. More about why they were bitter in today's Weather
Talk.
